Where are the Anthems?

RESIST, INDIVISIBLE, Town Hall Confrontations, Invigorated Bernies and assorted Greens and Feminists.. the wheels are grinding slowly toward defining and promulgating a collective progressive response to the 22-million person movement that is TrumpTweetWorld. Whether such a motley assortment of largely mainstream college-educated people can somehow rise to the level of a National social movement is doubtful. Without self-conscious committed joint energy from the Black and Latino communities, the movement aborning will abort, as MoveOn has. To capture the necessary spark will likely require greater outrage over the injustice of economic inequality in America than we have seen to date. The raw energy of the post-2009 pain and suffering has largely been tragically misdirected, to the benefit of the plutocracy. Time to wake up!

WE SHALL OVERCOME.. or maybe not. Where are the slogans and songs to rally round? Bob Dylan deserved the Nobel Prize, if at all, not for literature or for poetic song lyrics, but for his unique imprint on the culture of the 1960s. Four iconic anthems of the anti-war movement appear on his first two albums alone, in 1963 and 1964: Blowin' In the Wind, The Times They Are A'Changin, Masters of War, and .. They animated the movement thru the tragic year of 1968, and on thru the denouement of the Vietnam War in the early 1970s. Who will give us an anthem?
